Knitting pathway

G3 Charity Knitting

When I was eight I learnt how to knit, my Nana and my Grandma taught me. I didn’t really do that much knitting until year 7 when we started doing clubs and I got put in the knitting and sewing club. Since then I have improved lots in my knitting and wanted to use my skills to help a good cause. I decided to knit some baby hats. But I didn’t want to do it alone so I asked Lucy to make some hats as well.

In the last weekend of the holidays after term one Lucy came to my house. We spent 4 hours straight knitting. I made one baby size hat in this time, Lucy started making a teddy bear. Once lucy had finished the teddy bear a few days later we decided that it looked to much like a minecraft character so Lucy unraveled it and made a hat with the wool instead. We spent the next term knitting more hats and we managed to find some nice bootie patterns so we decided to make some matching sets of hats and booties. Each hat took me 3-4 hours to make and an individual of bootie took me 1-1.5 hours. On average I spent 62.5 hours knitting total. I made 10 hats and 11 pairs of booties. Lucy made 9 hats and 9 pairs of booties. In total we donated 19 hats and 20 pairs of booties.

On Friday the 28 July My Mum drove Lucy and I to the lincoln maternity hospital. There we met Lucy’s mum Janine outside. When we went indoors we were greeted by a midwife, Bronwyn, and a hospital aid, Melissa (Janine had called the hospital before we came to let them know we were coming to donate some knitted baby garments so they were expecting us to come.) They talked to us about our knitting and said they were running low on donations at the moment so they were very happy to see us. Then they showed us the birthing room with all the different places that you could give birth on.

After we saw the birthing room Melissa and Bronwyn let us meet one of the babies, Kayla, and her mother, Anna. Then we got to let Anna choose a set of hat and booties for Kayla. They were a little too big for Kayla but it was still super cute. We said goodbye to Anna and Kayla and went down the corridor back to the reception. We talked to Bronwyn and Melissa some more and then we said goodbye. I am really happy with how they turned out and hope I do more charity knitting in the future.
